Abstract
The article analyzes certain assumptions from scientific positivism and some characteristics from 19th century’s literary Naturalism showed in Os sertões (1902), an essay by the Brazilian intellectual Euclides da Cunha, in order to explain the elements used in The War of the End of the World (1981), novel written by the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, to create the identity of its grassroots characters, the sertaneros, around their corporality. However, the novel exceeds this approach and portrays an identity for their grass-roots characters, in their individual and collective spheres, written by the search of satisfaction of some emotional needs, the same search Freud attributes to religion.
