Abstract

This article critically examines the appropriation that authors such as Deleuze and Negri make of the Spinoza’s concepts of potentia and potestas. Through conceptual analysis, we will demonstrate that this interpretation privileges ontological aspects of the Ethics over the socio-political ideas of the Political Treatise and Theological-Political Treatise, establishing a rigid opposition between both concepts that is not found in Spinoza. While Deleuze distinguishes potentia and potestas to subsequently oppose them politically, Negri and Hardt rigidly oppose both concepts ontologically and politically. Against this reading, we maintain that in Spinoza both concepts form a dynamic continuum: the potentia of the multitudo necessarily actualizes itself as state potestas to secure the common welfare. This would allow for a better understanding of the relations between popular power (potentia) and institutional power (potestas) in Spinoza, as well as avoiding both state essentialism and absolute anti-institutionalism, offering conceptual tools to confront the contemporary crisis of political representativity.

Luis Omar Díaz Chocobar, Centro Baruch Spinoza

Es licenciado y doctor en filosofía por la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile. Su trabajo académico se sitúa en la intersección entre ética, estética y filosofía política. Ha sido docente en instituciones como la Universidad Andrés Bello, la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso o la Universidad Tecnológica de Chile (INACAP). Desde el año 2021 es coordinador y docente del Centro Baruch Spinoza, enfocado en la investigación y docencia comunitaria. También ha sido director asistente y fundador de la Fundación Novarum Crea, institución con la que colaboró en proyectos orientados a la innovación pedagógica y la educación imaginativa. Ha participado como expositor en congresos, coloquios y jornadas especializadas en filosofía contemporánea, teoría política y estética, presentando trabajos sobre Deleuze, Spinoza, teoría crítica y los cruces entre filosofía y música. Es autor de diversos artículos publicados en revistas especializadas, entre ellos “La problemática de lo ético-político en Mille Plateaux” (2015), “Apuntes comparativos sobre la unión del alma y el cuerpo según Santo Tomás y Spinoza” (2014–2015), “Ritornelo y territorialidad: trazos para una teoría de la creación en Deleuze y Guattari” (2012) y “La política de la música: François Châtelet en la concepción musical deleuziana” (2023, en prensa). Su investigación actual se centra en la articulación entre la filosofía política (Spinoza, Balibar, Jessop), los procesos estético-afectivos de la subjetivación (Deleuze, Guattari) y el análisis crítico del discurso (Fairclough).
