This article analyzes Barioná, the Son of Thunder by Jean-Paul Sartre, focusing on negation as the foundation of the protagonist’s freedom and transformation. Through a hermeneutic-phenomenological textual analysis and an existentialist approach, it examines how Barioná’s tragic consciousness leads him to reject religious submission and the logic of dominant violence, breaking with Orthodox Jewish identity in the context of Roman domination over Judea. The study highlights the role of anguish, hybris, and freedom as creative acts, guiding the character toward an existential conversion, understood as an authentic affirmation of freedom in co-presence with the Other. The work is interpreted through Sartre’s philosophy, in dialogue with authors who shared complex historical contexts with Sartre, such as Hannah Arendt, for her analysis of the Jewish condition and totalitarianism, and Jean Duvignaud, for his study of the tragic hero, emphasizing the narrative’s ethical and political dimension.
