Abstract

This essay analyzes the problematic of ecological crises from its definition as a loss of the human space to then redefine through its dimension of a loss of the human in the biosphere through the evidence of some of its biophysical implications on the modern humanity. I continue following the lines of how the current moment of crisis is reached from a metabolic point of view, on the basis of a historical analysis on inflection points of the relationship of humans with geobiophysical processes, highlighting as crucial for the crisis the use of fossil fuel stocks conditioned by the growth imperative after the great initial expansion of capitalist modernity. Afterwards, I move to discuss the relationship between capitalism and crisis and justify how the transformation of the capitalist world-ecology is central for a transition without losing wellbeing. I conclude with a brief presentation of the degrowth proposal and the analytical and normative challenges that it entails.
