Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the paradigmatically spatial character of the notion of return, implied in all feelings of nostalgia, in the light of H. Bergson's research. The postulates made by the author, concerning states of consciousness and their representation through space, will be applied to our analysis of the feeling, in order to elucidate the relationship between space and memory implied in nostalgia. In this way, the feeling of nostalgia will serve as an exemplary case to analyzer the theoretical continuity in Bergson's work between his first two books: Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness (1889) and Matter and Memory (1896).

Degree in Philosophy from the University of Chile. Currently a student of Master in Philosophy at the University of Chile.
