Abstract

This work evaluates and analyzes the experience of boredom in contemporary society. It takes as a starting point the schopenhauerian considerations on the Will, the cycle of suffering and boredom. Later, it observes how the above concepts are anchored, at present, to the spatial and temporal forms that unfold with the establishment of capitalism. It argues that boredom, in this specific configuration, has a dual character: capitalism is an excellent pastime, but it also has a component of boredom, which causes us to be permanently immersed in a similar cycle —and at the same time different in many ways— of which Schopenhauer had proposed. A hermeneutical exercise of several passages from The World as Will and Representation is proposed, and at the same time a phenomenological attempt to “go to the experience of boredom itself” is articulated. Finally, the conclusion includes a brief reflection on boredom during COVID-19.
