The purpose of this article is to present the main characteristics of the aesthetic of German director Thomas Ostermeier (Soltau, 1968), almost unknown in the Peruvian context, but of great relevance in the current panorama of European direction. Ostermeier is artistic director of the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin and winner of the Leone d'oro for his artistic career at the Venice Biennale. He has also directed fifty works by classic and contemporary playwrights. This paper is divided into two sections. In the first one, the development of theater direction in Germany is explain with the aim of bringing the reader closer to the knowledge of that tradition, from the 16th to the beginning of the 21st century, providing the proper context for understanding the next section. In the second one, the case of the German director is analyzed, taking as a reference the German and Italian critical production, and the artist’s own writings. Our hypothesis is Ostermeier’s poetics (New Realism) responds to some of the historical concerns of the German direction: attention to performance, inductive methodology of work and political commitment.
