Abstract

This paper is a critique of the article by contemporary philosopher Jon Stewart, entitled: Borges and the Refutation of Idealism: A Study of «Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius», which develops a Kantian interpretation of Borges’ story «Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius» as if it were a literary refutation of Berkeley’s philosophy, analogous to Kant’s supposed refutation of it. In this respect, I refute each of the supposed contradictions and inconsistences that Stewart identifies in Berkeley’s philosophy and thus prove that Borges’ story is not a refutation of it.

Alvaro Antonio Prado Velásquez, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú

Licenciado en Filosofía con mención sobresaliente por la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), con estudios de intercambio académico internacional en la Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Alemania) y en la Univerzita Hradec Králové (República Checa) por la Beca Erasmus+, y Primer Puesto en la Promoción de Egreso de Filosofía 2020-2. Docente jefe de práctica de varios cursos de filosofía en la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú y en la Universidad Antonio Ruiz de Montoya. Su área de especialización es la filosofía moderna temprana, en especial la filosofía de George Berkeley, sobre la cual tiene, hasta la fecha, otras tres publicaciones aparte del presente artículo, a saber: 1) su trabajo de investigación para obtener el grado de Bachiller, El verdadero sentido del inmaterialismo de Berkeley (2021); 2) su tesis para obtener el título profesional de Licenciado, El problema del autoconocimiento según Berkeley: La noción del propio espíritu (2021), por la cual recibió el Premio de Apoyo a la Investigación 2021, otorgado por la PUCP; y 3) su primer artículo, “En defensa del “argumento maestro” de Berkeley” (2023), publicado en la Revista de Filosofía ARETÉ (Vol. XXXV, No. 2).
