Abstract

It was in Peru that the key debates about the realization of Jesuit missions started, because it was the first Jesuit province in South America. The leaders of this debate were not only well known individuals. The administration of the Society of Jesus tended to develop decentralized committees, which is reflected at the level of the provincial congregations and the procurators. These committees were dialogic knots within the Society of Jesus. With internal sources, produced by the aforementioned institutions, we can clearly define alternatives in the debates on Peruvian missions. By means of the clearly epistolary character of local norms the Jesuits could bridge the gap between a local pragmatism and a global and unifying concept of the religious order.

Author Biography

Fabian Fechner, Universidad de Hagen

Estudió en Tubinga (Alemania) y en Buenos Aires Historia moderna, Geografía y Letras. Actualmente es profesor asistente (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) en Historia Global en la Universidad de Hagen (Alemania). En 2015 se doctoró en Tubinga con un estudio sobre las dinámicas administrativas en la Compañía de Jesús (en 2019 se publicará una traducción española del libro, bajo el título “Entre lo local y lo universal. La administración jesuítica en el Paraguay de os siglos XVII y XVIII”). Entre sus áreas de interés figuran, entre otros, la cartografía colonial y la heterodoxia en el Perú.
